沉香木受傷口被真菌感染，傷口周圍的組織因感染產生變化，於是樹木受此刺激，樹脂異化為膏脂狀的結塊，來將四周組織封閉阻斷，好包覆傷口進行自我癒合，這種樹脂結成的塊狀體，或其周邊受影響的木質部分，叫做「沉香」。
When agarwood trees are wounded and infected by fungi, the surrounding tissues undergo changes in response to the infection. Stimulated by this, the tree secretes resin that transforms into a waxy mass to seal off the affected area, enclosing the wound for self-healing. This resinous mass, along with the surrounding affected wood, is known as agarwood.
