How is agarwood formed?
Agarwood is not simply ordinary wood. When an agarwood-producing tree is wounded by natural damage, insects, broken branches, or other forms of stress, the tree may begin a defensive response around the injured area.
Over time, aromatic resin gradually accumulates within the affected wood. Microorganisms and environmental conditions may also play a role in this process. The resin-rich wood that develops through this long-term response is known as agarwood.

Two major agarwood market groups
For beginners, agarwood is often discussed in two broad regional market groups: the Hui An group and the Xingzhou (Sin Chew) group. These are traditional trade and regional classifications rather than strict botanical categories.
- Hui An group: commonly associated with mainland Southeast Asian sources such as Vietnam, Nha Trang, Hoi An, and Cambodia.
- Xingzhou / Sin Chew group: commonly associated with island Southeast Asian sources such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, and parts of New Guinea.
